Available for work

As you may know, I’ve finished my role at TPXimpact as a Senior Partner, managing a portfolio of clients and projects across Wales. I’ve had some time off, can’t claim it has been particularly relaxing as we’ve been dealing with a major family bereavement. But life goes on and I have a mortgage to pay and am feeling ready to take on new challenges and use my brain again.
I’m really hoping to return to running my tiny little business and maybe even growing it out a bit.
What I do
The best way to describe what I do is that I work at the intersection of delivery and strategy in delivering public services.
- I work at senior leadership level, leading teams doing the doing while I set the conditions for their work to continue and progress. Laying the train track ahead of the train. I know enough about most disciplines in the digital, data and technology world. I work with organisations to support them start working in modern, user-centred, service design-based ways. In the past, I’ve had roles as Programme Delivery Manager, Head of Delivery and Deputy Chief Digital Officer.
- The types of things I’ve done in roles that I’m really good at:
- Fixing broken things. Teams/processes/programmes that aren’t delivering or are struggling to get going.
- Starting things, building teams and handing over the day to day running. I am not a “business as usual person”. When things start hinting at routine, I need to move on.
- Coaching delivery teams and coaching senior leaders, around digital delivery, service design and the conditions for success for modern organisations.
- Specific things I can help with:
- Digital maturity reviews
- Where and how to get started with transformation
- Prioritisation at a strategic level
- Interim leadership roles
- Programme management
- Team health checks
- Project reviews & realignment
- Coaching (both delivery and exec teams) in digital
- Training in agile, user centred design
- Working in the open
My guiding principles
- My definition of digital is: Applying the culture, processes, business models and technologies of the internet-era to respond to people's raised expectations.
Digital does not equal IT or technology on its own. - I’m driven by delivering public good and solving interesting and weird challenges in public service delivery. Helping to deliver high quality services that improve people’s daily lives is the most important thing.
- Delivery, delivery, delivery. I’m not interested in theory, academics or endless pontificating. People need things to get better FAST. There’s a lot at stake*.
The unique things about me
I see the world in patterns. I know when something is going to fail a long time before any leading indicators provide “hard evidence”. My extensive experience helps me to guide situations and avoid pitfalls and failures before they happen. I know how bureaucracy works and how to work around it or through it. I bring different ways of thinking about and tackling challenges, I don’t stay nicely in a box.
I worked across a wide and deep number of public sector organisations in the 20 years of my career: there are very few Whitehall departments I haven’t worked in. I’ve also worked extensively outside Whitehall. My speciality is in devolved Welsh government and its arms-length organisations and NHS Wales. Wales has been my focus for the last 5 years and I have an extensive network of contacts and deep experience of devolved administrations and in a bi-lingual environment.
The fine print
Mostly I’m looking for (outside IR35) contracts or small outcomes based contracts where I can bring in a wider team of trusted colleagues to support your organisation. I don’t work a traditional 5 day week as I have other commitments that I need to balance. If you think you can’t afford me, you probably can as you almost certainly don’t need my time 5 days a week.
Successful digital delivery requires deep relationships and having real levers to effect change. For this reason I prefer working directly inside organisations with access to decision makers, rather than second hand through consultancies.
Get in touch
I’m not available to start work in earnest until 7th July, but I am really keen to have chats with people who might have challenges that I can help with.

*Yes, this is about politics and stopping the rise of those who don’t care about making things better, they just want to destroy and smash.
